Hi Duncan, My ancestor was a Maria Smale born on Dec.23, 1786. She married John Ridge Upcott who was born in Woodbury, Devon. Do you happen to have the birthdate of Mary Smale, the child of Richard and Joanna Smale? Thank you. Judith
hey Duncan Good podcast. Don't think this is my line. My Great-great grandfather was Richard Smale (1856 Holbeton) married a Elizabeth Spiller. Not sure when but Richard came to Canada and is burried at Mt Pleasant cemetery London ON. Cemeteryhttp://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cancemet/ON/ONM12701/U/index6.html
Elizabeth Spiller Smale seems to burried at Holbeton (so never came to Canada) I'm trying to do things on the cheap so i haven't been able to find out who their parents were.
Mr Smale, Tenant of Denham Farm, Bere Alston, to c1930.
I'm looking for any information about a Mr. Smale, who I understand was tenant of Denham Farm (aka Denham Market Garden, formerly part of the Earl of Mount Edgecombe Estate) nr. Bere Alston in the Parish of Bere Ferrers, West Devon. He was tenant up until c1930 when he sold it to the Langsford family.
We purchased part of the farm recently and are interested in any information about it's history what-so-ever, but particularly early photographs of the fruit pack-houses, and social history related to growing strawberries and daffodils.
My name is Duncan. I am researching the Smale family line. There are many Smale families in Devon, England. They are often indexed as Small or Smail. Variations of the name include Smales and Smailes. The line I research is not very well-known and is outlined below. I am listing the results of all the Smale hits I find to help others find their Smale ancestors. If you would like to contribute something please leave me a message as a comment on my blog. I will contact you or re-post what information you provide. Be sure to leave source information! If you would like for me to search a specific record for you, please leave me a message. I will get to it as soon as I can. Good luck on your search...
